Presiding Officer ยท District 7

Howard J. Kopel is the Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature and proudly represents the residents of Legislative District 7.

A lifelong Republican, Howard's values are rooted in free market capitalism, fiscal conservatism, traditional values, national sovereignty, unwavering support for law enforcement, and a deep respect for the principles that have made our nation exceptional. Committed to protecting the future of Nassau County, Howard stands strong against the far-left policies coming out of Albany and the socialist policies plaguing New York City.

As a proud member of the Jewish community, Howard remains steadfast in his opposition to antisemitism and anti-Zionism and strongly supports Israel.

Before entering elected office, Howard earned his Juris Doctor from Brooklyn Law School and founded his own successful title insurance company. In 2009, he was elected to represent Legislative District 7. After serving as both Deputy Presiding Officer and Alternate Deputy Presiding Officer, Howard was elected by his colleagues in 2024 to serve as Presiding Officer of the Nassau County Legislature.

A longtime resident of the Five Towns, Howard has always believed that strong communities are built through dedicated public service, responsible leadership, and listening to the concerns of every resident, regardless of political affiliation.

Howard has been married to his wife, Esther, for over 50 years. Together they have four children and fourteen grandchildren. Family has always been at the center of Howard's life and continues to inspire his commitment to serving future generations.

When he is not working on behalf of the residents of Nassau County, you can often find Howard around the Five Towns riding his bicycle, attending synagogue, or spending time with his family.
